Nice! You're an articulate fellow, Mick.

Have a blessed Easter with your sweet family.

Nicole

Very articulate.

So much of improvement actually has to do with subtlety. When to use it, when to shock, what to keep out.

Relationships do matter in this business, particularly if you become histrionic and have a reputation for being unmanageable.

Madison Richards

You've contributed so much to my journey as a writer, Mick. From practical advice to deep wisdom.

I, for one, am glad to know you.

Grace,
Madison

Great stuff, Mick. Thank you!

I know for certain only this: there's a lot I'll never know, get, of this publishing world...

But of the unconventional, the quiet fringe, the places just wrestling with craft, with Him who won't let go, those are the places to frequent, take up residence.

You're an honest voice, Mick. The world needs more of those...

Samantha Krieger

Love your wisdom, Mick. I just finished up Book Proposals that Sell by Terry Whalin and you guys are right on it. Thanks for your site!

It is a daunting task to be our true selves. But what power it has!

It's what the world wants. It's what the world needs. It's what readers will embrace.

Keep pushing, my friend.

Kristen

Wow! I'm glad I didn't read this before I pitched my story to you Friday. Been awhile since I've visited your blog or I'd have known to be more nervous. But nonetheless, thanks for helping me survive my very first pitch to a professional and of course for your restraint in not leaping over the table to bludgeon me with my one-sheet when I talked way too fast. God Bless

Angela Meuser

Sounds similar to what I've been reading about from The Fire in Fiction. You're lighting a match to set authors ablaze.

Merrie Destefano

Good point, Mick.

Thank you, Mick. Now I don't feel quite as crazy for having an inherent aversion to conferences, and workshops, and.... But I'd totally pay to hear you speak.

Cheers:)

I thought the publishing industry used a weighted point system:

+Facebook friends x 1.5
+Twitter followers x 0.8
+Blog readers x 2.0
+Annual physical audience x 10
-Baggy blue jeans penalty -30 (ea occurrence)
+Conferences attended +5 ea.
+Conferences spoken at +200 ea.
-Desperation factor (assessed by editor) -1000
-MySpace emphasis (so yesterday) -25
+Alternative talent (singing, magic shows, balloon tying) +500
+Soul patch +125
+Full sleeve +500
+Podcasts x 3/download (x6 if video)
+Golf handicap x -5
-Humility (assessed by editor) -300
+Subject/verb agreement +0.5 ea.
-Uses adverbs profusely -1,000 ea.
+Creativity +2 (max)
+Authenticity +3 (max)
+Car Salesman personality +1000

Anyone who scores over 3,000 gets published.

Something like that, right?

I scored 3001, so I just made it. Whew. Thanks, Mick, for the reminder to write well and w/passion.

Mick Silva

Bill, who gave you my secret list?!

That's hilarious.

Jenn Doucette

Mick, always like what you have to say. Sometimes I feel I'm the only one in the room saying "uhm, wait a minute, that just doesn't sound right . . " Thanks for being real.

Jenn
